Targets that can be gamed

Pass 2

Write the metric, the behaviour it rewards, and one check that is not the metric.

Ordóñez, Schweitzer, Galinsky, and Bazerman titled a 2009 paper “Goals Gone Wild: The Systematic Side Effects of Overprescribing Goal Setting.” The journal page blocked an automated check. This site does not list side effects beyond the title, and it does not treat the title as an argument against goals.

Ethics Unwrapped describes ethical fading as attention crowded out by a commercial frame. It is a teaching page, not a count of how often founders do this. The practice is to write, next to the target, what someone could game, conceal, or push onto a customer or a colleague, and which second measure would show that.

Question. Which targets could reward gaming, concealment, or passing harm to someone else, and which counter-checks do you need?

I have already signed, paid or lost access if the commitment is no longer only a plan.

Volume 23, issue 1, pages 6 to 16. The journal page blocked an automated check. A University of Arizona record matched the authors, the title, the journal, and the DOI. This site does not list side effects beyond the title, because the paper itself was not open.

An educational explainer. Ethical fading is being so focused on other aspects of a decision that the ethical dimensions fade from view. The narration attributes the name to Ann Tenbrunsel and David Messick. It is not a UAE rule.
